Saturday April 22, 2017:
This show was amazing! I kicked off the night by going to an old favorite, Meat In A Box, which is now Kabobgy which sounds way lamer than it used to be and the food tastes just stupid now unfortunately. I won't be going back there! Parking at The State Theater is always a bit tricky. Their lot fills up awfully fast. Luckily I found a spot right across the street! They did a coin toss to see which band went first and Ozomatli won that round which made more sense to me since they play there way more often and are more of a house band. Phew! I was up in front 3rd row most of the night. It was pretty packed for Ozomatli's set which was great. Too bad an audience member collapsed and 911 was called to send them to the hospital so Ozomatli stopped their set to make sure the situation was all figured out. I remember them being slightly better other times I'd seen them but this was still fun and I was glad they were so tight with the Squirrel Nut Zippers! The Squirrel Nut Zippers were every bit as good as I'd hoped they would be. They played Put A Lid On It pretty early on and The Suits Are Picking Up The Bill was also amazing live. West Of Zanzibar was a new song they played, also good. One of their instrumentals was also really familiar. Of course they played Hell towards the end and Ghost Of Stephen Foster was also quite good. Every musician onstage was incredible. The horn section, the female singer, the saw instrument thing was cool too. At the end of the show the guys from Ozomatli came back and when they started putting instruments away everyone jumped into the crowd. Ozomatli guys formed an awesome drum circle and the singer from Squirrel Nut Zippers was all in as well. Just an incredible show all around. Well worth the $40!!
